Pessary Fitting
What is a pessary?
A pessary is a removable medical, silicone device inserted into the vagina to support areas affected by pelvic organ prolapse.
Pessaries come in many shapes and sizes and are custom-fitted by a trained pelvic health specialist.
They offer a safe, effective non-surgical option for managing prolapse and urinary incontinence.
Who benefits from a pessary?
Pessaries may be right for you if you experience:
Pelvic organ prolapse
Urinary incontinence
Pelvic heaviness or pressure
Pre/post-surgical support needs
Pessaries are ideal for those who prefer non-surgical management or are not candidates for surgery.
The fitting process and follow-up
Initial Evaluation: Your physical therapist reviews your history, symptoms, and goals.
This includes a pelvic floor examination and assessment to determine the type and size of pessary needed. Not one size fits all.
Your PT and you will work to find the best pessary for you and your goals.
You will work with your physical therapist on how to insert and remove the pessary in office.
Your therapist will then provide you with education for daily and long-term use and care.
You will place your order for your pessary which can take 1-2 weeks to ship to RPT.
The number of follow-ups varies on a case-by-case basis. Below is the recommended schedule:
First follow up: Return in 1–2 weeks when your personalized device arrives.
4 week check
3 month check
6 month check
1 year check
These follow-ups are critical for managing vaginal tissue health and to assess for any concerns.
Most people adapt quickly, see a decrease in symptoms, and resume normal activities with confidence.
